How to care for a Country Camellia?
The camellia is a very easy-to-grow shrub, just as comfortable in a pot on a balcony or terrace as it is in the ground in a garden. It can be kept indoors during flowering, provided that some essential rules are followed. Place it in the light, near a window, a bay window, or in a conservatory, making sure to keep the temperature below 17°C (62°F). Spray its foliage with room-temperature water two to three times a week. Once flowering is over, it is best to move it outdoors, either in a pot or planted in the ground.
In a pot: choose a sufficiently large pot with drainage holes at the bottom. Fill the pot with a mixture of heather soil and horticultural or planting compost. The camellia can stay in the same pot for 2 to 3 years but will need to be repotted regularly. Watering should be regular during hot weather but never excessive, keeping the compost moist. It is important to avoid water stagnating around the roots.
In the ground: it thrives in sheltered spots, away from strong winds and harsh cold, whether in the shade, partial shade, or dappled sunlight. It does not tolerate limestone soil, so opt instead for a mix of heather soil, compost, and peat. Water generously after planting, then regularly during the first year, especially in hot weather, to help the roots establish in the soil. Remember to protect it from the cold each winter.
